Recognize & Reward Performance
Teams can be split up into three different categories: work teams, improvement teams and standing committees. Work teams exist all the time and can be found doing the everyday task of there firm. Improvement teams sometimes short term and are usually developed to improve one aspect of the business. Standing committees carry out specific tasks everyday to help with things like safety or discipline.
"There are two things people want more than sex and money -- recognition and praise."
-Mary Kay Ash
Reward systems for teams can be broken down into four different categories: individual compensation, individual recognition, team compensation and team recognition. Reward systems are something that is required for all effective teams. Without the implementation of some sort of reward system and team efforts usually fail.
The development of a comprehensive reward system for teams can be complicated and you may want to answer the following questions when proceeding.
- How much of an employee's pay would you be willing to risk?
- Is there opportunity for employee gain on the pay side and how much?
- Will team incentives be divided amongst team members and how?
- Will support personnel be participating in the team rewards?
There are generally thirteen steps in applying comprehensive reward systems according to the American Management Association. They area as follow: project planning, environmental assessment, readiness diagnostic, human resources strategy, design concept, design components, testing, transition, union participation, administration, education and communications, organizational integration, and ongoing monitoring.
